For the last thirty years, scentists have known that raising livestock, mainly beef, is the leading cause of global warming and climate change.
You may be thinking, “Eating beef is bad for the planet? Eating beef is as American as apple pie!”
Raising cattle is the major cause of gobal warming and climate change.
Recently I viewed a documentary on Netflix.com titled “Cowspiracy”. I recommend you, dear reader, see this film. It discloses facts regarding the major cause of global warming and climate change. It is shows what we can do about it. It’s NOT hopeless. We can reverse these devastating changes within a few decades, if we start now with some serious changes.
On average, a cow releases between 70 and 120 kg of Methane per year. Methane is a greenhouse gas like carbon dioxide (CO2). But the negative effect on the climate of Methane is 23 times higher than the effect of CO2. Therefore the release of about 100 kg Methane per year for each cow is equivalent to about 2300 kg CO2 per year.
Read on, but don’t take it lightly. Here are more facts:
Livestock now uses 30 percent of the earth’s entire land surface, mostly permanent pasture but also including 33 percent of the global arable land used to produce feed for livestock. Clearing forests to create new pastures, is a major driver of deforestation, especially in Latin America where 70 percent of former rainforests in the Amazon have been cut down for grazing.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) agriculture is responsible for 18% of the total release of greenhouse gases world-wide (this is more than the whole transportation sector). Cattle-breeding is a major factor in greenhouse gas emissions according to FAO. Says Henning Steinfeld, Chief of FAO’s Livestock Information and Policy Branch and senior author of the report: “Livestock are the most significant contributors to today’s most serious environmental problems. Urgent action is required to remedy the situation.”
Evironmental groups are NOT doing their job. Why? Because the solution to the problem deals with changing an ingrained lifestyle. In the documentary, “Cowspiracy”, one environmental head put it this way, “Even Al Gore, producer of “An Inconvenient Truth”, when questioned about why this issue wasn’t addressed, pushed back, admitting it just wouldn’t be accepted. We are talking about changing a lifestyle. It’s difficult enough to get people to believe the facts, much less convincing them to give up what they love.”
Did you know that it takes 660 gallons of water to produce one hambuger? Multiply that by the billions eaten daily around the world. Then consider the water shortage issues we have on the planet. For the last decade, drought has plagued countries and U.S. southwestern states like California and Texas. Let me ask you, would you rather have a hamburger or enough water to take a shower?
Ironically, in the near future (next twenty years) it is water that will wipe out whole countries! Global warming is melting icebergs exponentially, raising the ocean levels to the point of peril for millions. Scholars speculate that future wars will be about climate change, as refugees flee their drowning countries to find a place to live.
Humankind’s consumption of meat (cattle – beef, sheep, pork, bison) is causing major damaging environmental effects on the Earth’s atmosphere. We are now at the point where there is so much harm being done that we have already waited too long. If you watch “Cowspiracy” you will understand.
Still, scientists are hopeful. That’s becaue the effects of Methane on global warming can be reversed in a relatively short period of time. If raising cattle is reduced dramatically, the damage Methane has done can be reversed in two or three decades.
We all want a wonderful world for our descendants. Now, we can’t take that for granted. Each of us has to play an active part in making that happen. We must to eat differently. By doing so, we will not only preserve the future for our progeny, but also reap the benefit of better personal health. Most people know our current lifestyle diet is not a healthy one. Cutting out meat (or at least greatly reducing it) will improve our health. We will live longer, and our children will too. And good health brings greater quality of life for people, and our planet.
Dear Reader, by all means, continue driving your hybrid car, using energy efficient light bulbs and appliances, and recycling the trash. AND, add one more thing to your environmental conscience: change your diet, which will literally change our world.
We can heal our atmosphere! We can rid our atmosphere of methane gasses, and do it within three decades! We must. It is the heating of the atmosphere by poisonous gasses that is causing horrendous and violent flooding, blizzards, tornados, hurricanes, monsoons, and tsunamis. If you haven’t been affected by these weather patterns yet, you will. Soon.
And yet, just think. Isn’t it ironic that a simple thing like not buying or eating meat can change this?That they way we choose to eat, which in turn is the way we choose to spend our money, can inflence the practices of one of the biggest industries on the planet? It can happen quietly and powerfully by YOU choosing not to eat meat, or at least greatly reducing your consumption.
I want to be a part of that. I am willing to give up steak, milk, and cheese. Are you?
